Five saxophones, one universe of sound: for three decades, the Quintessence Saxophone Quintet has ranked among the most successful saxophone ensembles in the world. On stages from the Americas to Asia, the ensemble has repeatedly captivated audiences with playing full of virtuosity and energy, and a distinctive sound that infuses classical music with a jazz sensibility and rethinks it entirely. Thirteen albums and numerous video productions document this journey — yet the five musicians prove their true strength live, to this day: immediate, gripping, uncompromisingly virtuosic.
With its new program "LUDWIG200 – Beethoven to the Stars," the quintet now turns to one of the greatest names in music history: marking the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death, the ensemble has developed a concert program that goes far beyond a simple tribute. Beethoven stands at the center of a musical universe that makes audible his influence on other composers — from Johann Sebastian Bach, whose structural clarity shaped Beethoven, to the expressive power of Romanticism, and on to the sweeping, cinematic worlds of John Williams, who in turn drew inspiration from Beethoven. The result is an arc spanning centuries, revealing how a single composer shaped generations of musicians to come.
In Quintessence's signature sound — poised between orchestral power and chamber-music transparency — these connections take on a striking new vitality. For the ensemble, the program is also something of a reunion: more than 25 years ago, the quintet first explored Beethoven with its program "Beethoven Renovated." With "LUDWIG200," the ensemble now returns to this material — artistically matured, stylistically freer, and with an even broader musical horizon.
The program is carried by the ensemble's five musicians: Uli Lettermann (soprano saxophone, arrangements), Jonas Buschsieweke (alto saxophone), Thorsten Floth (tenor saxophone), Roland Danyi (tenor saxophone), and Anatole Gomersall (baritone saxophone). With their passion for playing and their unerring sense for sweeping musical arcs, the Quintessence Saxophone Quintet makes "LUDWIG200," too, a concert experience that lives up to its name.

Wenn fünf Saxophone zu einer Stimme verschmelzen: Das Quintessence Saxophone Quintet zählt seit drei Jahrzehnten zu den erfolgreichsten Saxophonensembles der Welt. Auf Bühnen von Amerika bis Asien hat das Ensemble sein Publikum immer wieder begeistert, mit einem Spiel voller Virtuosität, Energie und einem unverwechselbaren Klang, der klassische Musik jazzig einfärbt und neu denkt. Dreizehn Alben und zahlreiche Videoproduktionen dokumentieren diesen Weg – doch ihre eigentliche Stärke beweisen die fünf Musiker bis heute live: unmittelbar, mitreißend, kompromisslos virtuos.
Mit seinem neuen Programm „LUDWIG200 – Beethoven to the Stars“ widmet sich das Quintett nun einem der größten Namen der Musikgeschichte: Anlässlich des 200. Todestages Ludwig van Beethovens hat das Ensemble ein Konzertprogramm entwickelt, das weit über eine reine Hommage hinausgeht. Beethoven steht im Zentrum eines musikalischen Universums, das seine Wirkung auf andere Komponisten hörbar macht – von Johann Sebastian Bach, dessen strukturelle Klarheit Beethoven prägte, über die expressive Kraft der Romantik bis hin zu den klanggewaltigen Filmwelten eines John Williams, der sich seinerseits von Beethoven inspirieren ließ. Getragen wird das Programm von den fünf Musikern des Ensembles: Uli Lettermann (Sopransaxophon, Arrangement), Jonas Buschsieweke (Altsaxophon), Thorsten Floth (Tenorsaxophon), Roland Danyi (Tenorsaxophon) und Anatole Gomersall (Baritonsaxophon). Mit ihrer Spielfreude und ihrem untrüglichen Gespür für große musikalische Bögen macht das Quintessence Saxophone Quintet auch „LUDWIG200“ zu einem Konzerterlebnis, das seinem Namen alle Ehre macht.
